With deep regret and condolences to the family, the Kiowa County Independent reports that, on Tuesday evening, September 12th, the family of jockey Jesus “Chuyito” Munoz announced, via a post on Facebook, that the young man had succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The message, posted in Spanish, essentially read as follows:
To all the community that has been asking about the state of Jesus “Chuyito” Munoz, we give the sad news that he has passed away. Today, at ten, we will have all the information on Univision.
Munoz was riding in the 6th race on Saturday at the Kiowa County Fair and Rodeo. When his horse left the gate, he went straight for the rail, throwing Munoz from the saddle and some distance into the infield. Munoz sustained life threatening injuries in the fall and was flown to Swedish Hospital in Denver where he spent several hours in surgery. He was then transferred to ICU and was listed as being in critical condition on Monday morning. Munoz had been in a coma since surgery; it is not known if he regained consciousness prior to his passing away.
The Munoz family had started a GoFundMe page asking for donations and prayers for Jesus and his family, which, according to unnamed sources, included his 18 month old son. Anyone interested in making a donation can go to the site for more information. The web page is GoFundMe.com; the name of the campaign is “Let’s Help Chuyito Munoz”. Photos of the young man and his family are on that site as well.
