La veta Wins Championship in McClave Volleyball Tournament

Eight teams participated in the McClave Cardinals Invitational volleyball tournament held on Saturday, Oct. 6.

The field featured three Class 1A state-ranked teams including No. 3 state-ranked La Veta, No. 6 Walsh, and No. 10 McClave.

Unbeaten Walsh entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed while McClave was No. 2, and La Veta was No. 3.

The rest of the seeding had South Baca at No. 5, Kim/Branson at No. 6, Manzanola at No. 7, and Granada at No. 8.

Class 2A Holly came in as the No. 4 seed.

In the best of three format, La Veta emerged as the tournament champion with victories over Kim/Branson (25-5, 25-8) and McClave (25-18, 25-20). In the championship match, La Veta defeated Holly (25-18, 25-20). The Indians (14-1) are riding an 11-match winning streak since their last loss to Kit Carson in five sets back on Aug. 31.

Holly advanced to the title match to knock off previous unbeaten Walsh in three games (19-25, 27-25, 15-9 in the semifinals. The loss snapped an 11-match winning streak for Walsh.

In the third place match, McClave also beat Walsh in two games (25-21, 25-19).

In the fifth place match, Kim/Branson defeated South Baca (25-16, 25-20) in a meeting of District 3 teams.

Granada picked up its first win of the season as the Bobcats won over Manzanola (25-20, 22-25, 15-10), in the seventh place match. The win for Granada ended a 19-match losing streak dating back to Oct. 7, 2017 when they beat Manzanola.

In Class 1A District 2 matches this week, McClave (3-1 and 12-5) plays at Eads (0-2 and 6-8) on Tuesday, Oct. 9. McClave sits in second place in the league standings behind first place Kit Carson (4-0 and 15-1).

Granada will host Class 2A Las Animas on Tuesday and then travels to Kit Carson for a league match on Friday.

Wiley sets a double block against Eads on Thursday - Photo Credit Sharon WilsonIn District 3, Wiley (1-1 and 7-9) is idle this week before the Panthers travel to play South Baca on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Last week, Wiley won in five games against Eads on Tuesday, Oct. 2 and lost in three games to Kit Carson on Thursday, Oct. 4.

Walsh (2-0 and 11-2) leads the district standings followed by Springfield (2-1 and 9-4), Wiley (1-1 and 7-9), Kim/Branson (0-1 and 8-5), and South Baca (0-2 and 9-6). Walsh and Springfield square off on Tuesday, Oct. 9 in Springfield in a key league match.

In Class 2A, Holly returns to Santa Fe League action when they host Rocky Ford at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11 and then travels to Las Animas on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. Last week, the Wildcats picked up a pair of five set league wins against Fowler on Oct. 2 and John Mall on Oct. 4.

The Wildcats (6-3 and 9-7 overall) sit in fourth place in the SFL standings behind Swink (10-1 and 16-2), Rye (10-1 and 13-2), and Hoehne (8-2 and 11-7).
