Southern Plains 12U Tournament

Over the weekend there was a lot of softball action in Holly as they Southern Plains 12U Tournament was in full swing.  The season has been short and sweet for SP softball as the national Babe Ruth association they play in decided this year to move up the dates for the annual tournament trail that normally doesn’t start until mid-July.  This year the state tournaments are slated for the weekend prior to the 4th of July.

Eads MajorsWhen the dust cleared in Holly the Kit Carson 12U team would be crowned as champions after defeating Cheyenne Wells in the championship game, 17-5.  Cheyenne Wells defeated Eads to advance to the championship in a 14-10 semifinal game.

In that game Katie Johnson would start on the mound for Eads and go the distance.  She would have a tough first inning giving up 7 runs on three hits and six walks.  Eads would score two runs in the first inning including a run from Rachel Kopasz who walked for Kara Wilson who hit Kopasz in on a double.  Wilson would also score on two stolen bases.  Cheyenne Wells would get five more runs in the second inning.  The CW pitcher, Kenzie Brossman, would hold Eads scoreless in the second inning.  However, in the third Eads exploded for six runs.  Ashley Briggs started the rally with a walk.  The next two batters made outs so with two down Eads then scored their six runs off of two more walks and then four hits in a row by Breanna Habinck, Johnson, Katheryn Trosper, and Piper Sorter.  However, Cheyenne Wells was too far ahead and would finish the game with the win advancing to the league championship.

Coaches for Eads were Junior McDowell, Abbie McDowell, and Hailey Ray.

In the league championship game Cheyenne Wells batted first as the visitors but could get nothing going off of starting pitcher Stephanie Framel from Kit Carson.  They would finally grab one run in the top of the second and another in the third.  However, Kit Carson’s bats were on fire as they would score seven runs in the first inning.  In that inning Lindsey Mahan, Torrie Ranel, and Raeli Voss would lead the way with big hits.  The rest of the runs came in numerous walks.  Kit Carson would get three more runs in the bottom of the second.  Voss and Framel would score off of numerous walks.
Cheyenne Wells - 2nd Place
Cheyenne Wells came roaring back in the top of the third as it looked like they could do some damage but only chipped the deficit by three runs off of Framel walks.  Kit Carson then came up and put an exclamation point on the championship game scoring 7 more runs.  Most coming from strong base running and numerous walks.

Coaches for Cheyenne Wells included former players Brittni Legg Talbert, Autumn Mitchek Pelton, and Katie Smith.  Coaches for the Kit Carson team are Robert Framel, Jason Randel, and Dara Randel.

The players selected as league all-stars will now get together and form the 12U All-Star team that will represent Southern Plains in the upcoming Babe Ruth Tournament Trail.  More information will come available in the near future.
