After numerous people have listed a fitness center as one of their top priorities for a new business in Eads, Saturday, July 29th will be the day they see that wish granted when Demitasse Gym finally opens its doors. And, man, is it going to be something.
“Three thousand square feet is a good size to work with,” states Chelsea Davis, one of the partners of Demitasse Gym. “And the layout of the building is perfect for what we want to do.”
So, hold on to your hats, folks, because what they’ve created in that space is probably more than anyone hoped for or expected.
After an enormous investment of thought, planning, time, energy, resources and paint, Chelsea and co-partner Cathy Davis have created a space that’s good for the whole person. (Other family and friends gave hours of time to the project, as well.) And the product of all that labor is truly wonderful.
A quaint coffee shop will serve a variety of caffeinated beverages, smoothies and protein shakes. People who want a little color in their lives can either choose to spend time tanning or browse among the selection of plants and event flowers for sale. For the individual who is in search of a unique gift (whether it’s for themselves or someone else), there will be any number of different items available for purchase. And for those people who are in need of some relaxation or pampering, there’s rentable space where massages and manicures/pedicures will be available by appointment.
As charming and unique as the other shops are, special time and attention were spent creating the space devoted to Demitasse Gym. In recognition that people have different schedules and times when they can work out, members of the gym will have any time access to a well thought out assortment of equipment, including ellipticals, recumbent and upright bikes, a treadmill, stair climber, numerous target specific machines as well as a free weight area.
The system for having access to the gym is simple and secure. Upon obtaining a monthly or annual membership, fitness enthusiasts will use his/her key card on the south entrance of the building. A small locker room is available as many busy members may be squeezing in a workout before work, during lunch hour or after the daily grind. While showers are not available, new lockers are available for rent for member convenience.
As many people might already know, Chelsea Davis is anything but a newcomer to the world of fitness. Prior to moving to Eads, she spent ten years as a teacher and middle school/high school coach in Guymon, Oklahoma. She also taught spin classes and exercise classes at the Texas County YMCA in Guymon and lady’s fitness classes in a private gym.
The idea of owning her own business has been a long time dream of hers, as well, especially a business where she could apply her passion for working out and fitness. However, in order to be successful, Chelsea knew the fitness center would have to be supplemented with other products and services that people would find of value. She decided to do what simply made the most sense: start a business that incorporated all of her passions under one roof.
In retrospect, Chelsea admits that there were times she had her doubts about whether or not she was going to be able to carry through as she hoped. Almost immediately upon moving here, she started looking for property that might be available on Maine Street, but everyone she talked to turned her down. It wasn’t until the building’s previous owner offered to sell the building did she realize her dream might truly be within her grasp. “And, boy, did we pounce on it,” she says with a laugh. “We didn’t have to think twice.”
Once things got into motion, the realization of the dream was especially fulfilling as she was able to share the experience with her mother-in-law. “I’m so blessed with a mother-in-law who shares many of my same interests,” she says. And so, Chelsea and Cathy did what business partners typically do: they set out to transform the property into what they envisioned it could be. From Maine Street, passersby can see the façade facelift complete with more energy efficient windows, new exterior lights, garage door and fresh paint. Meanwhile, the interior was equipped with new electrical work throughout the building, a small kitchen area was constructed and new flooring was installed while existing flooring was restored.
The result? A whole new look to an already great property that is just waiting to be opened to the public.
As that day approaches, the Davis duo wants to extend their deepest gratitude to all the individuals who have continued to offer their encouragement and well-wishes as Demitasse Gym slowly came in to existence. They also want to thank the Eads Town Council for providing a new-business water incentive. “We’re so thankful for all the support,” says Chelsea, “and are thrilled to offer so many much-needed services right here on Maine Street.”
