By Bill Bunting
Man’s one desire was to be free
So he stood and fought for the right to be
Thirteen small colonies on foreign land
Called the Crown’s bluff and called her hand
And stood and fought and stood and bled
Battle fields would soon run red
But they had a cause for which they’d die
And freedom was their battle cry
Fifty six men had signed the Declaration
Of Independence of the new nation
And had called on Providence for divine protection
To lead the new nation in the right direction
A mighty price in lives was paid
For the foundation of freedom laid
And years of freedom have been enjoyed
Because of the safeguards that were employed
Our Constitution has stood strong
Through the right and through the wrong
And now after two hundred fifty years
We are still in the battle so it appears
To keep the freedom that they sought
The America for which they fought
The battle now is with words and truth
And the drawing away of our youth
The mindset of the next generation
Stepping up to lead our nation
Will America continue to stand
And freedom reign across this land
Only if we return to the God whose inspiration
Led to the founding of this Great Nation
One Nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
At least, that’s the view here from behind the grindstone.
