He stands in the time
When the days most done
Accented by
The setting sun
And it feels good
To get outa the saddle
After spendin’ the day
Checkin’ on cattle
And to contemplate
On the day now past
It seemed so slow
And passed so fast
And the sunset’s getin’ bright
Like painted with a brush
As he’s walkin’ in the peace
Not wantin’ to rush
His horse is tuggin on the reins
Wantin’ to graze
When there in the west
It looks like a blaze
The colors blaze high
Like a fire in the sky
Then they fade slowly
And flicker and die
He watches the fading
Till he sees the last spark
Knowin’ all the time
He’ll be ridin’ in the dark
The cool and the freshness
Of the night air
The smell of sagebrush and cedar
Are a magical pair
He gathers his reins
And steps in the saddle
It’ll be another day
If there’s a battle to battle
Cause he’s at peace with the world
And the world with him
He points his horse toward home
As the light grows dim
His horse needs no guidin’
He knows the way well
He’s lonesome for home
And for his own corral
At least, that’s the view here from behind the grindstone.
