WE geared Up For Summer

In the fall of 2018, a group of women united to form a civic group with the quest to support the idea of community in Eads and throughout Kiowa County. With that in mind, Women Empowered (WE) strives to serve our community with the objective of empowerment of others in reaching their goals through our encouragement, support, positivity, strength, and love. In a nutshell, the group hopes to support other community groups in addition to organizing our own events that will likewise help us support our community.

In less than a year the group has worked together to provide school supplies to the teachers of Eads Schools, held a successful social/auction, and provided some some smaller scale support of recent cancer survivors in our community. As our initial fundraiser WE orchestrated a spaghetti supper for teachers, parents, students, and community members on parent-teacher conference night. The success of the fundraiser allowed the women’s group to honor one Eads and one Plainview high school senior with a $250 scholarship. It was with great honor that WE presented the first annual Women Empowered Scholarships to Lauren Spady of Eads and Benji Davis of Plainview. The recipients were chosen based on their responses to essay questions about the importance of community, and we were impressed with the thoughtfulness and insight of all applicants. Lauren and Benji were awarded their scholarships at their respective graduations in May. The group hopes to continue to award scholarships in the future and hopes to grow the scholarship as the group grows.

WE has some upcoming activities planned including volunteer support of the 4th of July Kid’s Parade Infant/Toddler Zone, the organization and sponsorship of the KidZone at The Crow-Luther Foundation’s Maine Street Bash, and some other planned activities throughout the year (more details to come). WE strongly supports other local foundations/organizations/non-profits and is excited for the future of Women Empowered’s role in community activities.

The women of WE would like to thank past and present sponsors for their contributions as it has led to the success of WE thus far. Sponsors/donors/volunteers have included: JJs Restaurant, Hometown Gas and Grill, Demitasse, Eads Auto Supply and Hardware, Kiowa Healthmart, J&Js Liquor, Crow’s Stop and Shop, Kiowa County Independent, Kiowa County Press, Kiowa County School District, Kaylee Wilson, Lauren Spady, Hadlie Rittgers, Emily Gyurman, Laura Bybee, Linda Tropser, Joshua Cherry, and Kim Harris (WE Member).
