As reported in the January 20, 2021 edition of the Kiowa County Independent, Kiowa County Sheriff Deputy Quinten Stum was arrested on January 12, 2021 and charged with Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder in the Second Degree, a felony, and Reckless Endangerment, a misdemeanor, in the April 9, 2020 officer involved shooting death of Eads resident, 39-year-old Zachary Gifford.

On Thursday, Stump appeared on bond in the 15th Judicial District Court via Webx distribution with his defense attorney Cynthia A. McKedy, from the law firm Amaya, McKedy out of Colorado Springs.

District Attorney Josh Vogel appeared in the Prowers County District Courtroom.  The Honorable Judge Davidson has been assigned the case and handled these proceedings.

During the appearance, McKedy requested a Preliminary Hearing in order to present evidence and conduct arguments.

The Preliminary Hearing has been set to be conducted in person at the Kiowa County Courthouse in Eads, Colorado on April 30, 2021 at 10:00 am.  This will mark more than a year since the shooting death of Gifford took place.

A second police officer, Kiowa County Undersheriff Tracy Weisenhorn, was also involved in the April 9, 2020 incident but was not charged by District Attorney Vogel in the case.
