The Prairie Pines Auxiliary, a recently organized support group for the Prairie Pines Assisted Living Facility, has organized a Valentines fundraiser that focuses on sweet creations by their superb facility cook and baker Christina Wolfe. These creations include beautifully decorated cake pops organized into different sized bouquets, cocoa bombs, and chocolate hearts with chocolate strawberries. All unique gifts that are perfect for giving to loved ones of all ages on Valentines Day.

Valentine sweets orders must be made by February 6 by calling Prairie Pines directly at 719-438-2141. Orders can also be made by calling Prairie Pines Auxiliary president Violet Sneyd at 719-688-2781. You can also go to Prairie Pines Assisted Living facility located at 101 E. Lowell Street, on the far south end of Maine Street in Eads, to get your order filled.

See their ad in the January 25 and February 1 editions of the Independent.

The Prairie Pines Auxiliary was formed in October of 2022 with the goal to help raise funds for the Prairie Pines Assisted Living facility in order to make improvements the budget can’t cover. The current officers are Violet Sneyd, President; Barbara Hernandez, Vice-President; Debra Lening, Treasurer; and the Secretary position is currently open. The Prairie Pines Auxiliary meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6:00 pm at the Prairie Pines facility.

Any family member or citizen can become a member of the Prairie Pines Auxiliary. Simply come to the facility and fill out the form with your information and pay the $5 annual dues. The Auxiliary group uses the dues for the Auxiliary’s startup and administration costs.

So far, the Auxiliary has raised enough funds to buy Christmas presents for all the residents, sponsored a Christmas decorating day putting up all the holiday decorations for the staff and residents, and have purchased team tee-shirts for all the staff members.

In addition, the group took over the mobile cart system at the facility, which functions like a “C-Store” where the residents can use their Prairie Pines Bucks to purchase snacks. The facility was using $50 per month out of their budget to keep the mobile cart stocked. With the Auxiliary taking over that service they have saved the facility $600 per year.

The Valentines Sweets fundraiser is designed to assist the facility in purchasing a computer for the kitchen. Currently, the dietary manager brings her own computer to work each day in order to maintain the dietary requirements for each and every resident in every meal that is prepared. This can take hours of extra work but is a vital part of the job. In addition, a computer for the dietary department will be used for nutrition trainings online, recipe research, ordering, zoom meetings with other facilities and more. In essence, it is the goal of the Auxiliary that the addition of a computer for the dietary department will raise efficiency and the level of food service for the residents and staff members alike.

The Auxiliary is fast becoming a huge asset to the Prairie Pines Assisted Living facility administration and board as they strive to help make the facility a joy to work and live in. The Auxiliary has many great ideas moving forward. Future plans are to assist in the purchase of a hot tub for residents and to continue identifying and then assisting with needs that arise with the residents and staff.

This spring, the Auxiliary is planning a spring yard clean-up. More information will be coming on how interested individuals can help.

If this kind of work is something you might be interested in assisting with, all you have to do is call them (719-438-2141). You’ll get a lot out of volunteering your time in the service of others—and the others will be the biggest benefactors of all.
