Have you ever wanted to go to a real-life tea party? Maybe an afternoon of visiting and socializing like the elite in London? Have you ever wondered what it might be like to cross the pond and indulge in this afternoon delight? Well, you don’t have to wonder any more.

In English society tea is taken every afternoon by men and women alike at what would be 4 pm our time. This tradition dates back to 1840 in England and the 7th Duchess of Bedford, Anna. Her evening meal was often served “late” at around 8 pm leaving a long period of time between the noon meal and supper. She would have tea and snacks brought to her bedroom and when it became a habit, she started inviting friends and it quickly became a custom.

The society women made this a fashionable event, and it became known as Afternoon Tea. They would often dress in long beautiful gowns, gloves, and hats. One woman would be the host and her house help would make cakes and pastries, clotted creams, jams, and dainty sandwiches. The events would last around an hour, and it would be held at a different estate the next day.

Today, teatime is not nearly as momentous, but most in England still have afternoon tea. Often with a simple biscuit or pastry.
