The Kiowa County Hospital District is pleased to announce that Lionel Wilson has accepted our permanent full-time lab manager position. Lionel has been working at KCHD since May as a travel MLT and the appointed manager of the department.

Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Lionel joined the United States Air Force in 2010 where he rose quickly through the ranks, becoming a decorated Airman and Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Lionel has experience working the bench as an MLT, as an Operations Manager for lab services, and as a Lab Surveyor. Lionel has a high degree of ethical integrity and a commitment to high quality, personalized care delivery.

In his role at KCHD Lionel has had a tremendous impact on the organization. Early on he implemented a new hematology machine, which takes months of validation work to ensure the equipment is operating correctly. He has developed organizational structure by creating standard operating procedures within the laboratory department and more efficient and transparent quality assurance and validation testing. He has helped to recruit a second fellow MLT, Bill Bowen, to our organization. He currently is hard at work to get our new chemistry machine, the Ortho Vitros 5600 implemented, which will be the focus over the next few months.

He has been recognized for his outstanding achievements by Dr. McLaughlin, our Pathologist and Medical Director, and our recent CLIA Surveyor. Additionally, he was presented the KCHD Annual Quality Achievement award in October by Beth Bell, CEO for his work improving patient care and quality in the laboratory department. Beth had this to say, “We are fortunate to have such a high caliber Clinical Laboratory Scientist working at KCHD. We couldn’t be more grateful for the work that Lionel has done in his short time with our organization, and we know the future is bright with him on our team and his family living in our community.”

Lionel moved here with his girlfriend, Kathy, who he met in Shreveport, LA while stationed at the Barksdale Air Force Base. They, along with Lionel’s 4-year-old son Nigen, are excited to live in Eads. They have already participated in so many community events, Nigen even rode his first sheep at the county fair this past fall! Lionel and his family are looking forward to going on many more adventures and enjoying all that Colorado has in store for them, from sand surfing at the dunes to skiing and white-water rafting.

Please help us extend a warm welcome to Lionel and his family as they embark on their new chapter here in Kiowa County.
