Kiowa County Hospital District (KCHD) has announced it will be celebrating Hospital Week on May 13-17, 2024. During that week there will be a number of fun activities for the district’s employees and the residents at the extended care unit culminating in a community barbeque on Friday, May 17th. In addition, the hospital employees are working on two fundraisers for two beloved employees who are currently fighting breast cancer.

Kiowa County Hospital District’s CEO Beth Bell said of the exciting upcoming celebration, “All are welcome! Hospital Week is fast approaching, and KCHD is hosting its annual BBQ and other festivities. On Friday, May 17th, the celebration will feature circus games from 3pm to 5pm, Darrel Stolzenberger on the grill, and a silent auction. Various themed baskets will be up for bidding, with proceeds aiding hospital employees receiving cancer treatments. In addition, KCHD’s new provider, Dr. Erik Ritch, will also be in attendance to meet and greet the community. This will be fun for the whole family so come on out and support a great cause!”

Bell also emphasized she hopes many people will attend their community event on Friday and when they do, please go into the extended care unit and visit with the residents who are very much looking forward to the celebration.

Now sponsored by the American Hospital Association, National Hospital Week “provides an opportunity to recognize employee achievements, to educate the community about the services hospitals offer, and to keep the public up to date on technological advances in the healthcare field.”

This year at the local hospital’s (KCHD) National Hospital Week activities takes on a whole new meaning as the staff it utilizing the celebration to help raise money for two valued employees, Marla Darnell and Shea Johnson, both who are currently in a life battle with breast cancer. The staff is organizing the No One Fights Alone Silent Auction which entails beautiful baskets loaded up with an array of donated items designed to attract many an admirer. The silent auction bidding on the baskets begins Monday, May 13 at 8:00 am and closes on Friday, May 17 at 5:30 pm.

The basket bid winners will be announced at the Hospital Week Community BBQ on Friday, May 17 at 6:00 pm. Everything in the basket is being donated by caring people and businesses.

The baskets will be available to view at the Hospital while bidding is open. Pictures of the baskets will also be posted on multiple Facebook pages associated with the District. Or call the hospital at 719-438-5401.

Once the money for the baskets is collected for Marla and Shea, this summer the staff at the hospital will hold more fundraisers in order to help them work their way through their treatments.

The idea came from a committee at the KCHD called No One Fights Alone. This group of employees pull together to raise funds to help support their fellow co-workers with major medical expenses. This year we are raising money to support Marla Darnell and Shea Johnson as they both fight cancer.

Following is the schedule the hospital workers will be following during National Hospital Week. It looks like great fun and if you happen to be a patient at KCHD at this time, you too may get great enjoyment from the happenings.
