Drivers traveling through Kit Carson on U.S. Highway 40/287 will soon face automated speed enforcement.

The Town of Kit Carson announced its automated speed cameras will go live Monday, Sept. 28, along a roughly one-mile stretch of U.S. 40/287 between mile markers 444.70 and 445.75. The cameras will monitor both eastbound and westbound traffic.

According to the town’s public notice, motorists caught speeding within the monitored corridor may receive a notice at the address of the vehicle’s registered owner. Violations will be handled through Kit Carson Municipal Court, and automated citations do not place points on a driver’s license.

The program comes as Colorado has updated its laws governing automated vehicle identification systems, commonly known as AVIS. Senate Bill 26-152, which took effect Aug. 12, changed statewide requirements for automated enforcement, including public notification, warning periods and responsibility for civil penalties. Colorado law requires at least 30 days of public notice before a new system is used and requires written warnings during the first 30 days after a new system is installed or deployed.

The Town of Kit Carson is urging motorists to slow down as the new system begins operation.
