This has not been an easy decision, but here we go…
When I first put on a badge, I made a promise—to serve with integrity, compassion, and fairness. I didn’t always get it perfect, but I always gave it everything I had. This badge has been more than a piece of metal. It’s been a symbol of responsibility, trust, and a commitment to protecting the kind of community we’re all proud to call home.
Over the years, I’ve seen this job at its best and at its worst. I’ve stood shoulder to shoulder with some of the finest men and women I’ve ever known. To the deputies, dispatchers, and every member of this office—you are the backbone of this county. You’ve worked long nights, missed family dinners, and faced moments that few truly understand. You’ve carried yourselves with honor, and it’s been the privilege of my life to serve alongside you, as of January 12, 2027 I’ll step down as the Cheyenne County Sheriff.
To my family—Kayla, and our kids—thank you. You’ve sacrificed the most. You’ve seen me leave birthdays, holidays, and dinners because duty called. You’ve endured the stress, the late-night calls, and the long days when I couldn’t be there. Yet through it all, you’ve shown nothing but love, patience, and pride. I couldn’t have done any of this without you.
To the people of Cheyenne County—thank you for trusting me with this responsibility. This is a community unlike any other—where neighbors still help neighbors, where we look out for one another, and where doing the right thing still means something. I’ve tried to honor that spirit every single day.
I’ve learned that being Sheriff isn’t just about enforcing laws. It’s about building relationships, earning trust, and leading with heart. It’s about compassion when people are hurting, courage when times are hard, and humility to admit when we can do better.
As I hang up the badge, I do so with pride, not for what I’ve done, but for who I’ve done it with—this team, this community, and this family that’s stood by me through it all.
To the Cheyenne County Communities, the support, and the honor of serving as your Sheriff. It’s been a true privilege.
God bless you all, and God bless Cheyenne County.
Sheriff Michael Buchanan
