Dear Editor,
I happened upon your article by Jimmy Brown, I think dated February 26, 2026, about the passing of Mrs. Durrett. She was my 5th grade teacher when we lived in Eads, I believe in 1956. My Father worked as a seismograph operator, and we had to move a lot. I think we lived in Eads about 9 months, and Mrs. Durrett was one of my favorite teachers among the many I had as we moved around the Country. I think one of her younger daughters, Beverly I believe, was in my class and we were good friends.
One day our class was in a building a little way from the school and when we were released from that class all of the students would race back to the front of the school to go back to our home room. Since I was the fastest, I usually was in front and on this day, I tripped on the sidewalk and fell and Beverly who was always right behind me tripped over me and fell and hit her head on the sidewalk and cut herself, and was bleeding pretty bad. I think we had been warned not to be running between classes, and I was horrified that I might have hurt her really bad. I think she had to be taken to the hospital for stitches and the next morning I tried to get my mom to let me stay at home because I just knew that she was hurt perhaps pretty badly, so I did not want to face her mom. When I got to class Mrs. Durrett was there and I think she realized how upset I was and she explained that she understood that it was an accident but that was why we should not have been running, and it would not have happened.
I was very relieved and Mrs. Durrett with her kindness made an unforgettable memory that remained with me for these 55 years and certainly made me a better person over all those years after I knew her. I will say I don’t know for sure that Beverly forgave me, but I think she did, at least she waved goodbye when we finally moved (I hope it wasn’t good riddance). Please pass my condolences on to the Durrett girls and let them know that their mom made a marked improvement in the life of one of her students who still remembers her for it.
(This was written only from my memory, and it is only pulled from what is now an old and foggy mind).
Here is the article I read that brought back the memory of this incident. kiowacountyindependent.com/lifestyles/7049
