Guidelines for Submitting a Letter to the Editor

By Priscilla Waggoner

March 14, 2018

There are a handful of mainstream issues in this nation that engender strong feelings among people, on both sides, and the freedom to express our disagreements is one of the beauties of living in a democracy. When we express those disagreements in ways that are mature, civil, reasonable and respectful of the other person’s right to an opinion--even when the opinion opposes that of others--the dialogue is elevated, and the community benefits, as a whole.

This is the third week that we’ve received correspondence to the editor regarding views related to one of those topics, specifically the debate over “assault rifles”, including the gun known as an AR-15.

There’s no doubt; many people have strong feelings about the topic. As editor of the Independent, I want to express my appreciation to past and present contributors for choosing to submit letters that reflect their opinions but are also polite and courteous, even while their words were sparked by feelings of strong conviction.  I hope this type of conversation serves to encourage other, likewise civil, discourse among people as they discuss the topic, whether they are on the same or the opposite side of the fence.

With that said, what follows are the guidelines for future submissions of Letters to the Editor. Guidelines will also be posted on the website for future reference.

Length:  500 words maximum

Required: Writer’s name, address, town and a phone number where he or she can be reached to verify authorship. (Only the writer’s name and town will be published.)

Editing:  All letters are subject to editing for length, “style” (including grammar and punctuation) and content that we deem to be of a singularly attacking or slanderous nature. Publication is at our discretion, and we do not guarantee every letter will appear in print or online. We also do not guarantee a publication date.

What we won’t publish:  Anonymous letters, form letters generated by advocacy groups, letters that we can determine were published elsewhere or letters of questionable content. We also discourage letters with multiple author signatures.

How to submit:  we prefer letters to be emailed to us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with “Letter to the Editor” noted in the subject line. We also accept letters that are mailed to us at:
