Letter to the Editor: March 14, 2018 (Stum)

By Linly Stum

March 14, 2018

Mr. Stum originally wrote a letter to the editor, titled “I have seen the enemy, and it is us”, which ran in the February 28, 2017 issue.  The following week, two letters were submitted in response, both of which are referenced in the letter below. One Letter to the Editor was submitted by Mr. Healy, titled “The Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself”. The other letter was submitted by Mr. Lovett.

Some of the goal of my first letter has been accomplished. The elephant in the kitchen is at least being talked about, but ignoring it while hoping it will go away is not likely to work very well.

The pro AR-15 assault weapon letters of last week only need brief, simple comments.

Ron Healy’s fondness for his AR-15 is somewhat justified by the fact that he was career Army, and troops are trained to be very close and personal with their weapon.  Soldiers have to rely on those weapons to stay alive.

But, after many, many words about the wonderful attributes of the AR-15 platform, he has confirmed and proved that it does precisely what it was designed to do: kill often and fast, which I must thank him for. He proved my point better than I could have.

One does not need to be the sharpest knife in the drawer to understand why the weapon of choice for the very sick individuals that commit the mass murders is the AR-15 type.

I have to agree with Mr. Lovett when he addressed the impact of violence in videos and movies on people.  That’s a very interesting point and worth more discussion.

But there was a very disturbing fact about the Healy and Lovett letters, and that is there was not a single word of concern about the pain, suffering, and loss by the hundreds of victims’ family members and friends.

Has our country become so callous and numb that we just shrug our shoulders when we learn about another mass murder?
