Letter to the Editor - March 28, 2018

By Daryle Lovett

March 28, 2018

Dear Editor:

I read Mr. Stum’s letter of March 14, 2018 and re-read his letter of February 28, 2018   I agree we must be coming more callous.  Neither Mr. Stum or myself said  a single word of concern about the pain,  suffering and loss by the hundreds of victims, family members and friends. I must state I do not shrug my shoulders for any death or am the grieving of families and friends.

I do not have more remorse  for those murdered by mass shooters than the other 3,412,630 (including 700,000 aborted babies) that died in 2016.  Of the total, 700,000 were aborted babies, 633,842 had heart disease, 595,930 had cancer,  38,000 died by gun (2/3 were by suicide) and 50,300 (20,00 by suicide) died by automobile.

There were 7,105 murdered by individuals using hand guns, 374 by individuals using any type of rifle and 262 were killed by individuals using shot guns.  Other means of murder included 1,604 killed by those using knives or other sharp instruments, 656 were killed with the use of hands and feet and 472 were killed by people using clubs or hammers.  Additionally, a sum of people were killed by people on pharmaceuticals or died using drugs.

One of the points I tried to make was that the AR-15 was not the cause of the deaths.  Other types of guns were used to kill individuals.  In fact, handguns were used in more killings and suicides.

Another point I tried to make is that the NRA is not responsible.  There are five (The Second Amendment Foundation, Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, Gun Owners of America, National Association for Gun Rights and Constitutional Rights PAC) stronger advocates for the Second Amendment.  They believe the NRA is too soft and should never have endorsed President Trump due to his weak stance on the second amendment.

If the NRA is partially responsible for gun deaths, Knife Right and the American Bladesmith Society are responsible for those killed by knives,  the AAA is responsible for thee 300 plus vehicular homicides and the AMA must be responsible for pharmaceutical deaths..

I tried to make the point that our society and our government are partially responsible for some of the deaths.

I do not trust our elected officials when it controls freedoms or rights.

Pat Miller in “Willfully Ignorant” stated:

THE BEST WAY TO TAKE CONTROL OVER A PEOPLE AND CONTROL THEM UTTERLY IS TO TAKE A LITTLE OF THEIR FREEDOM AT A TIME, TO ERODE RIGHTS BY A THOUSAND ALMOST IMPERCEPTIBLE REDUCTIONS.
