The Town of Kit Carson is implementing a Local Agency Automated Vehicle Identification System (AVIS) along US 40/ US 287 between mile markers 444.70 and 445.75 to enhance traffic safety and reduce speeding through the community.

The program, authorized under Colorado Revised Statutes § 42-4-110.5, will begin with a 30-day public education and warning period before enforcement begins.

During the initial 30-day period which will be determined upon approval of the CDOT application, warning notices will be issued to violators to encourage safe driving habits and awareness of the new system. 30 days after the beginning of the warning period, citations will be issued to motorists exceeding posted speed limits within the designated corridor.

“This initiative is about safety, not revenue,” said Sheriff Michael Buchanan of the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office. “Our goal is to reduce dangerous speeding along US Hwy 40/287, protect our residents, and make this corridor safer for everyone.”

The AVIS system uses automated cameras to identify vehicles exceeding the speed limit. All systems are calibrated and maintained in compliance with CDOT and state standards. Signage will be installed in advance of enforcement zones, clearly notifying drivers that speed safety cameras are in use.

The Town of Kit Carson encourages the public to visit www.townofkitcarson.colorado.gov for details, including corridor maps, the operations and maintenance plan, and updates throughout the implementation process.
