Obituary: A Tribute to Susan Fox

By Janice Davis, Sue's Mother

March 15, 2023

Susan Jean Fox, beloved daughter, sister, mother and friend, died of cancer complications on March 3, 2023.

Susan was born to Janice and Roger Westerlund on September 17, 1963, in Ames, Iowa. She was welcomed by older sister Ellen and later they welcomed sister Martha. This trio of girls was known as “The Westerlund Girls” in the neighborhood and throughout their school years. Sue was active in music groups and Campfire Girls during her elementary years; Campfire camp and horse camp were a part of each summer’s activities. She continued her interest in music during junior high and high school and added distance running with the high school track team. Co-editing the high school yearbook filled many hours during her senior year.

Sue’s organizational skills were evident from an early age. As a third grader she arranged her sock drawer by style and color and kept her collection of Breyer horses in a special order on her bookshelf. She was also exacting. Later, everyone who worked with Sue knew the job would be done and done properly.

Sue’s interest in Special Education was sparked when she worked as an educational assistant in the Eads schools. She then pursued a Master’s degree in Special Education while managing a family and a full-time job—once again showing her planning skills. She loved her job and treasured her students. Sue embraced extra duties including coaching the Knowledge Bowl teams as well as several years of coaching track. She enjoyed seeing students gain new skills and confidence.

Most important to Sue was her family. Sons Tyler and Jake knew Mom wouldn’t stand for any nonsense and they also knew that she loved them deeply and cherished spending time with them. Tyler and his wife Priya as well as Jake and his wife Alyssa were a great comfort to Sue as she battled the cancer that eventually took her life. We will cherish many happy memories of our beloved Sue knowing of the love and devotion she shared with many.

Sue’s Celebration of Life will be at the Kiowa County Community Building on Sunday, April 2 at 2pm. Rather than flowers, please direct any donations to the Crow-Luther Cultural Events Center in Eads, where Sue was involved for many years.
