The Eads Lady Eagles volleyball team finished their regular season with the best record they’ve had since 2013 when they qualified for the 1A state volleyball tournament and went 1-and-1 in Denver. They grabbed their final conference game over Granada last Tuesday, 3-0, but then lost to a very strong Idalia group on Friday night in their final game of the regular season.
They now enter the Region 1 Tournament seeded #16 and will square off against #1 Merino and #24 Sangre de Cristo at the Merino High School gymnasium on either Friday or Saturday. The winner of the region will advance to the 1A state volleyball tournament in Denver on November 10-12.
Granada gave Eads a good contest in the first set as ToriLin Riddle bothered the Eads hitters at the net with a number of partial blocks. However, Eads continued to pound away at the Granada defense and won the first set 25-20. They then took care of business in set two winning 25-10, and then finished off with a competitive 25-21 win.
Senior Maggie Haase led the way offensively with 16 kills, followed by freshman Kara Wilson with 11 kills. Outside hitters Tailee Weeks-Johnson and Lisi Buller added 8 and 3 kills respectively.
Eads had 38 kills over all and hit at a 33% pace. They also scored off of 11 ace serves and only missed 5% of their serves.
Haase, Weeks-Johnson, Buller, Brianne Habinck and Aless Paez each had 2 aces apiece. Wilson added one more ace serve.
Defensively, Haase led the way with 4 blocks and Wilson added one block.
Paez also led in digs with 23 and fed her hitters successfully 19 times.
Libero Katie Johnson had 20 digs.
Samantha Courkamp had 9 digs and 6 assists.
Habinck had 11 assists. Buller added 9 digs and Weeks-Johnson had 7 digs.
No stats were available for Granada.
Eads only managed to put down 18 kills and hit at a 21% kill rate while Idalia added 32 kills and 11 aces in their 3-0 win over the Eagles in set scores of 25-13, 25-21, and 25-10.
Idalia is 20-3 on the season and last week upset the #3 McClave Cardinals who were undefeated to that point. The Wolves are ranked #5 in the RPI and CHSAA rankings.
Weeks-Johnson led Eads with 5 kills while Haase added 4 more kills. Buller had 3 kills and Wilson chipped in 2 more. Wilson also added 2 ace serves.
Weeks -Johnson also led defensively with 14 digs, Courkamp and Johnson each had 12 digs and Paez added 8 digs.
Paez added 7 assists while Courkamp had 5 assists.
The Eagles have used the RPI effectively and qualified for this week’s Region 1 Tournament. Other area teams in the Regional Tournament includes Kit Carson (#2) hosting Region 2; McClave #3 will host Region 3 that also includes Springfield (#14); Cheraw (#13) will be in Region 4; and Wiley (#6) will host Region 6;
Winners in each of the eight Regional tournaments will advance to the 1A State Volleyball Tournament held in Denver on November 10-12.
