The Colorado U.S. Kids Spring Tour got underway on Sunday at Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club in Colorado Springs. Eads 6th grader Reese Barnett won the 11-12 year old girls’ division of the tournament shooting sub-par golf in the 18 holes with a 69—3 under par for the day.
Despite three-putting on three different holes, Barnett used her strong drives and accurate short game to overcome the putting issues. She would gather a total of 5 birdies (-1 under par) on the day bringing in a -2 under 34 on the first 9 holes.
On the back nine, Barnett suffered one of those putting errors resulting in a bogey on 15. Most times, golfers will lose their composure after a hole like that. But Barnett came back and parred 16 to stay even par on the back nine.
She then took advantage of her ability to drive the ball, landing it close to the pin in two strokes on a 360-yard par 5 hole on 17. She would then sink her putt for an Eagle to bring home the impressive sub-par performance and a tournament championship.
Barnett led the rest of the field by 8 strokes as second place went to Chloe Johnson from Parker with a +5 over 77 in the 18 holes. Kaia Chand from Denver was +10 over 82 for third place.
The win put Barnett on the top of the leaderboard going into the next weeks of the spring tour. The next tournament for the U.S. Kids Spring Tour will be held at Desert Hawk Golf Course in Pueblo.
