Numerous area track & field teams traveled to an exceeding competitive La Junta Relays Meet on Friday including Eads, McClave, Granada, and Wiley. Large schools were on the menu as a number of Pueblo teams and other Ark Valley teams competed well.
The McClave boys placed 10th in the huge field of large school utilizing their strength in the jumping events and relays. Three key seniors are the anchors for this dynamic team including Aiden Martinze, Aydin Gomez and Gavin Tempel.
In the girls’ division Eads placed 6th in the 28-team field utilizing high finishes from Maggie Haase in the 100 Hurdles, Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump.
They also got a championship out of freshman Tailee Weeks-Johnson who hit yet another PR in the Shot Put going 38’ 9.00 feet. Last week, the Eads freshman was leading the nation, among all freshmen on MaxPreps.com, a site that collects most of the high school performance in multiple sports, in the Shot Put with her best performance from the League Meet in Holly at 37’ 11.00. In second place was a girl from Florida, Zhane Evans with a best throw of 35’ 3.62”. A Colorado girl, Taryn LaForce from Strasburg, is the third best freshman Shot Put thrower in the nation with a best throw of 32’ 7.50”.
Eads head coach Stephanie Bohlander said of the La Junta meet, “LJ gave us some mild temperatures and good competitions. It was a big meet and is probably the nicest facility we will compete at all year.”
Bohlander then described the action for her team memembers, “The Eads 4x800 relay boys, Connor Lynch, Brenden Reifschnieder, Colin Nelson, and Karston Buller, ran a few seconds off their best, but put forth great efforts in this competitive race. The big schools brought their best distance runners, so we saw some big times there. Connor ran a whopping 17 seconds faster than his PR in the 1600 and continues to improve and impress me week in and week out with his efforts and training. Karsten and Colin jumped well, and Jaden ran his best 800 of the season. So, our young guys are really turning the corner.”
Haase competed in the Long Jump for the first time this season and jumped her way into the rankings. She’ll play with both the Triple Jump and Long Jump the next few weeks. Those are in addition to her High Jump where she is undefeated.
Stockton Mitchek jumped well, but struggled on the runway a bit, so that took some of his power out. However, he placed well in a big field of big school jumpers. He definitely has much more distance in him. Mitchek also ran a best 300 hurdle time this week.”
The next meet for Eads and most of the surrounding schools will be in Rocky Ford this weekend.
