The area track teams found themselves in Burlington on Saturday and enjoyed strong competition in decent weather, except for the wind that caused some exceptional performances to be considered “wind aided” and therefore not qualifiable for the state meet. Nevertheless, Cheyenne Wells, McClave and Eads girls continue to battle it out against the bigger schools. The Cheyenne Wells boys continue to dominate this area and could make some loud noise at the state meet in a couple of weeks if they keep on this pace.
Stand out performances in the girls’ division came from Tailee Weeks-Johnson (Eads) in the throwing ring, Maggie Haase in the jumping pits, and Haase joined Shaylee Scheler from Cheyenne Wells who dominated both hurdle races. Both McClave and Cheyenne Wells’ relay teams also showed strong performances.
For the Eads boys it would be Stockton Mitchek who had a tremendous day winning the 300 Meter Hurdles for the first time against a competitive field of athletes. Mitchek also had strong marks in the jumping pit, but the wind was too strong to count in the state-qualifying standards. McClave’s Aiden Martinez and Aydin Gomez put some major points up from the jumping pit. The Cheyenne Wells boys picked up major points from their relay teams. Finally, John Hainer from Granada continues to dominate the throwing pit where he won the shot put and placed second in the discus.
Eads’ 4x800 Meter Relay consisting of Karston Buller, Colin Nelson, Connor Lynch and Brenden Reifschneider took 30 seconds off their best performance to date and got in the money in the tough meet. Cheyenne Wells won the event.
There are just two weeks left in the high school track season. This weekend all the schools will be at the Limon 1A “Last Chance to Qualify” Track Meet. Those that do make the standard will then compete at the 1A Colorado State Track & Field Meet at Jeffco Stadium in Denver on March 18-20.
Eads head coach Stephanie Bohlander is looking forward to what her team can do as they enter the final leg of the season, “This is an exciting week we are entering. It’s almost as exciting as State Week because it is Do-or-Die week. This is the last chance to qualify, to put their best out there for the top spots in rankings, and to get their end-of-regular-season marks where they should be. Spring is such a demanding time and season, so for these athletes, reaching these marks has been a grueling three-month effort, but it is the ultimate reward when you get what you earn in track and field. In Limon, make no mistake, our kids will be ready for the last week of the season.”
