Kit Carson Volleyball in Good Position to Advance to State

It’s been a rollercoaster season for the Lady Wildcats from Kit Carson volleyball team as they are currently sitting at a decent 13-10 season record—nothing to write home about—but worth taking a look at if you know anything about Colorado 1A Volleyball, and even more, about the winning tradition that Kit Carson holds in volleyball.

After some good wins and some tough losses, the Wildcats, ranked #15, have qualified for the 24-team Regional 1A Volleyball tournament and will take their 13-10 record on the road to La Veta (#10, 19-4) where they hope to pull what looks like a major upset. It’s actual quite possible they can as La Veta’s season competition, overall, has not been near as tough as the KC schedule.

It will come down to whether the Lady Wildcats show up in La Veta ready to play like there’s no tomorrow—because in this regional tournament format there isn’t. We’ll find out on Friday, November 3 at 4:00 pm.

The final week of the regular season showed the Kit Carson girls some good lessons they must take to heart. The big lesson came from a very quality team in Idalia (#6, 18-4). The Wildcats traveled to Idalia on Oct. 19th and were controlled completely by the Wolves, 3-0. Last week Kit Carson finished the season against a struggling 2A team in Rocky Ford (2-20). The Wildcats had little trouble with the Lady Meloneers winning 3-0.

Kit Carson 0, Idalia 3

In the Idalia contest the Cats lost in set scores of 10-25, 19-25, and 17-25. They were outhit by the Wolves 35 kills to 17 kills. In addition, the service line is usually an asset for the Cats, but against Idalia they only put down 2 aces while the Wolves added 7 ace points. Finally, where Idalia only made one serve-receive error (35 of 36), Kit Carson had 3 errors (48 of 51).

Freshman Avery Johnson led the way offensively with 6 kills. Nadaya Buttry and Lindsey Mayhan each added 4 kills, while Shay Rady added 3 kills.

Just Johnson and Payge Booker-Rady each managed one ace serve.

Defensively it was Booker-Rady with one block and 13 digs. Mayhan added 2 blocks and 12 digs. Ashlee Koch and Buttry each picked up 7 digs, while Johnson picked up 13 digs.

Shay Rady ran the show handing out 13 assists to the Wildcat hitters.

Kit Carson 3, Rocky Ford 0

Kit Carson totally controlled Rocky Ford in their final game of the regular season in set scores of 25-21, 25-15, and 25-14.

The Wildcats completely overwhelmed the Meloneers with 22 kills (25.9%) to 6 kills (9.2%). The KC crew dropped 14 ace serves on the Rocky receivers, while the Meloneers had 5 ace serves. Finally, it was a slightly sloppy game as Kit Carson had 5 serve receive errors (30 of 35) while Rocky Ford suffered through 13 serve receive errors (36 of 49).

Mayhan led the Cats’ attack with 8 kills. Booker-Rady added 5 kills, Shay Rady had 4 kills, and Koch and Buttry each chipped in 2 kills apiece.

Booker-Rady dropped 5 ace serves on the Rocky group, while Mayhan had 3 aces, and Rady, Johnson, and Buttry each had 2 ace serves.

Booker-Rady led defensively with 1 block and 12 digs. Koch and Mayhan each added 1 block. Johnson had 8 digs and Buttry added 6 digs.

Shay Rady distributed 17 assists among her Wildcat hitters.
