The husband/wife duo of Mark Stephenson and Vony Stephenson from Cheyenne Wells won the annual One-Man-One-Woman Modified Scramble Tournament at the Eads Golf Course on Saturday.

Four flights of 22 teams competed in the 18-hole scramble tournament.

The rules of a Man-Woman Scramble require the man to go hit the woman’s first shot and vice versa until they get to the green. It’s always a lot of fun and a good tournament to begin the season.

The Championship flight was won by Mark & Vony Stephenson of Cheyenne Wells who were just over par shooting a +1 over par 73 in the 18 holes of the tournament. The Championship Flight was not without its drama as there was a playoff between the second and third place teams of Jacob and Brandy Barnes and Tom and Kim Richards. Both teams had come in with +3 over par 75s on the day. The Barnes team won the playoff for second place and the Richards had to settle for third place in the Championship Flight—still in the money.

The First Flight was won by the husband-wife team of Leo Hurtado and Shelly Hurtado who came in with a front nine score of 40 but turned up the heat on the back nine shooting a par 36. They would tie with Colby and Tia Christie with a +4 over 76 for the win eventually as they had to get it in the playoff against the Christies forcing them to settle for the runner-up position. Third place went to Robert and Natalie Framel of Kit Carson shooting a 41-36 resulting in an overall tournament score of +5 over par 77.

The Second Flight was won by the husband-wife team of Fritz and Melissa Gilbert who started a little slow on the front nine with a +6 over par 42 but shot par golf on the back nine resulting in a Second Flight winning score of a +6 over par 78. Second place went to the duo of Doug Dietz and Jessica Millspaugh shooting a +7 over par 79 on the day.

Yet another playoff was in the works in the Second Flight as there was a tie for third place between the father-daughter team of Bobby Rittgers and Rhaelie Rittgers of Eads and Weston and Kailey Meardon of Eads. Both teams had come in with a +8 over 80 on the day. In the playoffs the Rittgers grabbed the win for the final money in that Flight.

There was also a Third Flight scored in this Man-Woman Scramble Tournament. That flight was won by Brandon Briggs and Kara Peters shooting a +14 over par 86. The team started out behind with 46 on the first nine holes but stormed back with a solid 40 on the back nine for the win.

Second place in the Third Flight went to the married couple from Wiley, formerly of Eads, Trey and Hadlie McDowell coming in with rounds of 46 and 41 for a +15 over 87 in the 18 holes.

And yet another playoff had to be determined for the final placing of the tournament between Jimmy and Kailyn Darnell of Eads and Beatle and Sharon Koch of Eads. Both teams shot an 88 in the first 18 holes. The Darnell team grabbed the win in the playoffs.

This first tournament at the Eads Golf Course was a success as it saw a lot of new golfers getting involved in the sport of golf. Follow the Eads Golf Course and Smoky Hill Golf Course schedules to catch when the next tournaments will be held and then make plans to get involved.
