The Eads Golf Course brought its tournament season toward a close over the weekend with a two-day finale featuring plenty of golf, competition and camaraderie.
The weekend opened Saturday, Sept. 19, with the final Men’s Two-Man Scramble of the season. The tournament drew teams competing across three flights — Championship, First and Second — before golfers and club members gathered Saturday evening for a Calcutta and dinner. The weekend was scheduled to conclude Sunday with the flighted Eads Golf Club Championship for club members.
In Saturday’s scramble, the Championship Flight produced the lowest scores of the tournament, with the team of Randy Holmen and Phil Dieterle putting together an impressive round of 66 to claim first place. The pair was steady throughout the day, making the turn with 34 before turning up the pressure on the back nine with a 4 under par 32.
Just one stroke separated the champions from Colin Leake and Declan Leake, who earned second place with a 67. The Leakes also went out in 34 before coming home in 33, keeping themselves in contention throughout the round.
The Championship Flight was competitive from top to bottom. Marvin Bohlander and Colby Christie were right behind the leaders with a 68, shooting matching nine-hole scores of 34-34. Lonnie Spady and Loren Patterson finished at 70, going 35-35, while Brian Bohlander and John Christie carded a 71 after an excellent 33 on the front and a 38 on the back. Jose Ramos and Edgar Aguilera rounded out the flight with a 72, shooting 35 on the opening nine and 37 coming home.
The First Flight was won by Jess Buller and Brantley Buller of Eads, who were remarkably consistent in putting together a winning 72. The pair shot 36 par on the front nine and matched that with another 36 on the back.
Finishing just one stroke back in second place were Robert Framel and Cody Fry, who combined for a 73. They opened with a 37 before shaving a stroke off that total with a 36 on the back nine.
Joe Self and Bill Cochell were also in the mix, shooting a 74 with matching rounds of 37 on each nine. Two teams finished at 75. Neil Richardson and Lonnie Eder shot 38-37, while Jay Wilson and Stephen Wilson also went 38-37. Logan Crawford and Lester finished the First Flight with an 82 after rounds of 39 and 43.
The Second Flight featured the closest battle of the day as two teams finished tied at the top with rounds of 77. Larry Gifford and John Philpy of Eads went out in 40 before making a strong move on the back nine with a 37. Kip Peck and Kyle Sniff also posted a 77, matching rounds of 40 and 37. The scoresheet indicates the two teams tied for the flight lead.
Just one stroke behind them were Trent Ritters and Gaige Ritters, who carded a 78 after shooting 40 on the front and 38 on the back. Randy Bohlander and Robin Gibson finished at 80, with a 42 on the opening nine followed by a much-improved 38 on the back. Beatle Koch and Kevin Koch rounded out the Second Flight with an 87, shooting 45-42.
Saturday’s scramble served as the opening act for one of the final big weekends on the Eads Golf Course calendar. Following the tournament, attention turned to Saturday night’s dinner and Calcutta, where club members prepared for Sunday’s Eads Golf Club Championship.
The Club Championship would provide one more full day of competition, this time with Eads Golf Club members battling within their respective flights for the season-ending Club Champ designation.
